Safety Tips Which Should Get Followed By Forklift Drivers
A forklift should be operated with
ultimate safety and responsibility. Any carelessness may result in
many serious consequences. An operator tasked with operating the
machine should have a full understanding of the safety precautions.
It helps to maintain a safe working environment and prevents any
unwanted accidents. As a forklift driver, you are responsible for the
machine and the safety of other people working around you. For this
purpose, let us look at the safety precautions that should be
followed while doing forklift
driving jobs in Brisbane.
Never
carry humans on the forklift
Do
not ever carry humans on the forklift. The forklift is designed for
only one person - the driver or operator. No other person should be
in the forklift other than the operator. It is observed that in many
places, more than one person ii on the forklift. This is an enormous
safety hazard. The forks of the forklift should never be used to sit
on or carry people. Also, the operator compartment is designed to fit
only one person. More than one person will make the compartment
crowded and prone to accidents.
Do
not turn or travel when the load is raised
The
load, when positioned near to the ground, provides stability to the
forklift and helps in easy manoeuvrability. However, a raised load is
highly unstable, irrespective of its weight, and any forklift
movement with a raised load will make the machine unstable and cause
the forklift to lose balance and tip over. This can be highly
dangerous for the operators doing forklift
driving jobs and also for
the workers working in the vicinity. So, whenever you want to turn or
travel with a load, lower it and keep it as close to the ground level
as possible to maintain stability.
Do
not overload the forklift
Overloading
the forklift is another safety hazard and should be grossly avoided
during operations. An overloaded forklift is highly unstable and can
easily tumble with the slightest movement resulting in serious
accidents. Moreover, such accidents more often end up damaging or
destroying major sections of the facility. So, beware of the weight
capacity limits of the forklift and operate them accordingly.
Be
extra careful while operating a forklift on an incline
A
ramp or an incline are common features in warehousing, manufacturing
and storage facilities. While doing forklift
operator jobs, you should know
how to navigate through the inclines without causing any accidents.
Manoeuvring the forklift on these inclines requires extra effort and
attention. While going up the incline with the load, drive forward.
And while going down the incline with the load, drive in reverse.
These actions will help you maintain load stability while navigating
the ramp.
An
unstable load is hazardous
The
load should be packed well and must be stable. Before moving a load,
always make sure that the load is stable because an unstable load can
prove to be very dangerous. And unstable load can fall off the fork,
damaging the products, facility and the truck. So, make sure that the
load is well balanced and properly secured before lifting. The
heaviest objects should be placed close to the bottom to improve
stability.
